We prefer a strong brew, so for our test, we used a coffee to water ratio of 1:15. As recommended in our Coffee Grind Chart and Guide, we ground the whole beans to medium in a bur grinder. We added a little bit of hot water and let the coffee bloom.
After the bloom, we did a slow, steady pour with a gooseneck kettle. The drain rate was perfect to have a continuous flow of water, facilitating optimum turbulence and extraction. The total time for the 30 ounces of water was just under five minutes. The bottom of the dripper was well above the coffee, even when a full pot is made.
With the silicon sleeve around the neck, it was easy and comfortable to pour the brew. The cup of coffee was smooth without any bitterness. The flavor complexity was satisfying, and we love knowing we’re not throwing away any goodness with a paper filter. The body had a silky mouthful. Happily, we found no stray grounds in the final cup.
The entire cleanup was quick and easy. We used a bit of soap on the metal filter to ensure no oily residue was left behind. Any residue would clog the fine mesh filter. The opening of the carafe is narrow, so we did a quick swish with a bottle brush inside of the carafe.
You can put the components in the dishwasher. However, some reviews mentioned the mesh had a tendency to separate from the filter frame. Therefore, we suggest handwashing to get the most life out of this brewer.

A heat-proof silicon sleeve easily slips on and off the neck of the carafe. That way you can grasp the carafe and pour steaming coffee without burning your hand. We recommend not putting the sleeve on until after brewing.
The metal filter has a projection tab you can grasp to put it on or take it off the carafe. We didn’t notice the silicon covering on the tab until we dumped the grinds. The whole filter fell in the trash and we were left holding this little piece of silicon! Now that we know, we firmly grasp the little handle and haven’t had that problem since.
The silicon base serves two functions: stabilize the carafe and protect it from bumps. It also serves as a heat barrier between the bottom of the carafe and your countertop. With the bulbous shape of the carafe, it would be prone to spilling if it didn’t have this base. And with the extra cushioning the silicon provides, you don’t have to be super careful when putting the carafe down.
While there’s no question about the quality of coffee the pour over method gives, it’s not for everyone. To decide if this method is right for you, consider these two things: how much time you want to spend making coffee and how much you want to make.
Pour over coffee takes time. While a powerful electric kettle could speed up the water heating time, you still need to tend to the actual brewing process. With other methods, like an automatic drip machine, you basically set it and forget it.
To get the best results with a pour over, you need to slowly and constantly pour the water between 3 1/2 and 5 minutes, depending on how much coffee you are making. Personally, I love this built-in pause in my day to combat the constant rush of modern life. Others might find this irritating.
