If you love coffee, you probably already know the benefits of pour over coffee. You may already have the ubiquitous single-serve coffee dripper at home. This manual brewing method produces full, rich flavor. But what if you want some to share?
This Uno Casa pour over coffee maker is designed to make 34 ounces of coffee. That’s enough for two or three large mugs of coffee. What’s more, this brewer includes a reusable metal filter. No more going to make coffee only to discover that someone used the last filter! The eco-conscious part of you will love not having to throw away yet another paper filter.
The pour over coffee maker from Uno Casa gives you ultimate control to make a perfect cup of coffee. It has a simple, elegant design. The 34-ounce glass carafe stands 7.9-inches tall and is 4.75 inches wide. You can store it on the counter between uses. It looks nice and takes up very little space.
The silicone base keeps the carafe steady, and the reusable stainless-steel filter fits snugly in the carafe. These two features mean you can focus your attention on making the perfect pour. And with the reusable filter, you never have to use paper filters again.
In the box, you'll find a four-cup carafe, a metal filter, and a lid. A silicone tab slips on the handle of the metal filter so you can pick it up when it's hot. The package includes a silicone sleeve that fits around the neck of the carafe to make pouring easy. It also has a silicon base to protect the carafe and your counters. All this comes with a simple manual and a QR code to download a more detailed coffee guide.
The size of the carafe is perfect for two people, even if they like giant mugs. It would also work for one person if you transfer the coffee into an insulated carafe or extra-large travel mug. It may not be the best option for larger groups or if you drink several cups of coffee throughout the morning.
Out of the box, we liked the look of this coffee maker. If you’re not familiar with using a pour over maker, you might want to refer to our article, How to Make Pour Over Coffee. After a quick wash in warm, soapy water, we were ready to try it out.
We prefer a strong brew, so for our test, we used a coffee to water ratio of 1:15. As recommended in our Coffee Grind Chart and Guide, we ground the whole beans to medium in a bur grinder. We added a little bit of hot water and let the coffee bloom.
After the bloom, we did a slow, steady pour with a gooseneck kettle. The drain rate was perfect to have a continuous flow of water, facilitating optimum turbulence and extraction. The total time for the 30 ounces of water was just under five minutes. The bottom of the dripper was well above the coffee, even when a full pot is made.
With the silicon sleeve around the neck, it was easy and comfortable to pour the brew. The cup of coffee was smooth without any bitterness. The flavor complexity was satisfying, and we love knowing we’re not throwing away any goodness with a paper filter. The body had a silky mouthful. Happily, we found no stray grounds in the final cup.
The entire cleanup was quick and easy. We used a bit of soap on the metal filter to ensure no oily residue was left behind. Any residue would clog the fine mesh filter. The opening of the carafe is narrow, so we did a quick swish with a bottle brush inside of the carafe.
You can put the components in the dishwasher. However, some reviews mentioned the mesh had a tendency to separate from the filter frame. Therefore, we suggest handwashing to get the most life out of this brewer.
Amalie Auguste Melitta Bentz invented the pour over method of coffee with a paper filter in the 1930s. The technology has not really changed since then, but minor improvements continue. Here are some features specific to Uno Casa’s pour over coffee maker.
This brewer holds 34 ounces, or four cups. The most common pour over device is a smaller dripper that you can place over any type of mug. They are large enough to only make a single cup. These single-serve drippers can be made of plastic, metal, or ceramic and almost always need a paper filter. This larger filter and carafe make four cups of perfectly brewed coffee in the time it takes to make one.
A metal filter compared to paper produces a richer, more flavorful cup of coffee. Paper absorbs some of the oils naturally present in the coffee bean. These oils contribute to both flavor and aroma. Coffee made without a paper filter has a thicker, syrupy mouthfeel.
The Uno Casa filter uses a dual-layer mesh. These layers work together to give stability and won’t let the coffee grounds pass through. No one likes a mouthful of grounds! Additionally, paper filters cost money. And they use resources. So, the metal filter does the earth and your pocketbook a favor.
A heat-proof silicon sleeve easily slips on and off the neck of the carafe. That way you can grasp the carafe and pour steaming coffee without burning your hand. We recommend not putting the sleeve on until after brewing.
The metal filter has a projection tab you can grasp to put it on or take it off the carafe. We didn’t notice the silicon covering on the tab until we dumped the grinds. The whole filter fell in the trash and we were left holding this little piece of silicon! Now that we know, we firmly grasp the little handle and haven’t had that problem since.
The silicon base serves two functions: stabilize the carafe and protect it from bumps. It also serves as a heat barrier between the bottom of the carafe and your countertop. With the bulbous shape of the carafe, it would be prone to spilling if it didn’t have this base. And with the extra cushioning the silicon provides, you don’t have to be super careful when putting the carafe down.
While there’s no question about the quality of coffee the pour over method gives, it’s not for everyone. To decide if this method is right for you, consider these two things: how much time you want to spend making coffee and how much you want to make.
Pour over coffee takes time. While a powerful electric kettle could speed up the water heating time, you still need to tend to the actual brewing process. With other methods, like an automatic drip machine, you basically set it and forget it.
To get the best results with a pour over, you need to slowly and constantly pour the water between 3 1/2 and 5 minutes, depending on how much coffee you are making. Personally, I love this built-in pause in my day to combat the constant rush of modern life. Others might find this irritating.
The other consideration is how much coffee you want. This maker is ideal for one or two large cups of coffee. It would also serve three moderately sized mugs. This coffee maker may not be the best choice if you regularly make coffee for a crowd or like to sip coffee throughout the day.
You may also want to consider if you need to keep coffee warm for a period of time. With this glass carafe, you’ll want to make, pour, and drink the coffee right away. Other methods allow you to keep your coffee hot for a longer period of time, either with a thermal carafe or a warming plate.
The carafe on this brewer holds a whopping 60 ounces. Because the carafe is insulated, you can enjoy hot, fresh coffee throughout the day. You will have to use paper filters with this model. The dripper is made of plastic and is machine washable. Of course, you will have to hand wash the carafe. It is about twice the cost of the Uno Casa brewer.
