But first… What Is an Ube?

Ube, pronounced as “ooh-beh” is also called “Purple Yam”. It’s a unique and delicious ingredient that’s becoming more and more popular lately.

Originated from the Philippines, purple yam is usually used as a perfect addition to Filipino desserts.

It’s usually boiled and mashed with sweetened condensed milk to make Ube recipes such as Ube Halaya (sweet purple spread), and Ube ice cream.

But did you know Ube can also be used in a Latte?

Yup! You don’t have to visit the Philippines to enjoy Ube. Due to it’s rising popularity, it’s getting easier to find.

And the good news is… you make your own version at your home!

What is Iced Ube Latte?

An Iced Ube Latte is a coffee drink that’s made with the extract of Ube or purple yam. 

The said extract is mixed with some ice, almond milk, and espresso. You can also add toppings of your choice such as whipped cream or even ice cream. 

Indeed, it’s a delicious drink and a unique substitute for a regular iced latte.

How Does It Taste?

Ube Lattes often have a creamy and frothy texture with a sweet and nutty vanilla-like flavor. The Ube extract gives it a unique taste from a traditional iced latte. 

The taste of the purple yam itself is frequently described as milder and less earthy than sweet potatoes. It also has a hint of nuttiness and a light sweetness.

When you blend it with milk and espresso, the Ube flavor is balanced with the rich and robust taste of coffee. Hence, a delicious and refreshing fresh Ube drink is made!

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Ube Extract. If you want to enjoy the delicious taste of Ube, then Ube extract is the key! It’s the secret ingredient that gives your Ube latte its needed flavor. You may find it online or at Asian supermarkets. Using Ube mixture or any kind of Ube flavoring is also optional.
  • Ice. Keep your Ice Ube Latte refreshing by using a lot of ice. The hot espresso usually causes the ice to partially melt, so make sure to use filtered ice.
  • Almond Milk. We recommend almond Milk for the best outcome, but feel free to use your milk of choice. Unsweetened coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, whole milk, and sweetened condensed coconut milk are also a popular options by many Ube lovers.
  • Sweetener. This is optional, but it could significantly improve the flavor of your Ube milk latte. Any kind of sweetener is acceptable depending on your taste. If you want it to be simple, just add white sugar and you’re good to go. Other options are maple syrup, Ube syrup, and vanilla syrup. You can even make your own simple syrup!
  • Espresso. Use an espresso machine to pull your shot of espresso. We recommend using dark roast coffee beans. If you don’t have one, no worries. You can make a strong cup of instant coffee instead. The goal is to get a strong coffee flavor, so you can truly enjoy your creamy and wonderful purple yam latte.

How To Make an Iced Ube Latte?

  1. Prepare a cup of espresso or any kind of strong or instant coffee. If you prefer to add some sweetener, make sure to mix it with the hot espresso before it gets cold.
  2. Get your glass and simply add the Ube extract to it.
  3. Fill your glass with ice cubes. This will keep your latte refreshingly cold and it will also help to chill the milk.
  4. Take the chilled milk and pour it into your glass, make sure to stir well until it is completely combined with the Ube extract. Again, you can use any type of milk you prefer. You should get a light purple hue on your mixed drink.
  5. Then, you may now add the espresso shots or your strong coffee on top of the milk mixture.
  6. For more Ube taste, you can garnish it with Ube powder. You can also top it with whipped cream if you want it creamier.
  7. Finally, serve your Iced Ube Latte and enjoy your drink!
