Making Milk Sweeter

There are a lot of chemical changes that happens when you incorporate heat and air into milk. All you need to know is that it makes the milk taste sweeter and gives a rich, creamy mouthfeel.

Do I Need a Miroco Detachable Milk Frother?

Let’s suppose that you have an espresso maker that does not have a steam wand. If you want to make drinks like lattes and cappuccinos, you need a way to heat and froth the milk. This automatic frother can simultaneously heat and whip the milk to get the texture that makes café-style espresso drinks such a treat.

Even if your machine has a steam wand, you may still want a stand-alone frother. Steam wands require a bit of skill and attention. With this device, you just turn it on and the machine does the rest. Also, the tiny hole on the steam wand can get clogged. This detachable milk frother is easy to clean.

Even if you don’t make espresso at home, this automatic frother offers many benefits. It can turn a regular old cup of coffee into a delightful café au lait. It also makes fantastic hot chocolate.

Our Test Drive

Before using an automatic milk frother, I would either drink lukewarm coffee from adding cold milk or heat the milk in the microwave before pouring the coffee. Neither way was satisfying.

I used this frother to make frothed milk for regular coffee and to make hot chocolate. I was surprised by the creaminess of the coffee with frothed milk. It was as enjoyable as a latte from my favorite coffee shop! We’ll get to the hot chocolate later. Below are some things that stood out about this appliance.

Detachable Pitcher

The pitcher itself is lightweight. It has a wide spout which enables accurate, tidy pouring. You don’t have to worry about the cord knocking anything over while pouring as you do with a one-piece frother.

Temperature

The Miroco Detachable Milk Frother is set to heat milk somewhere between 149- and 167-degrees F on most settings. For hot chocolate, the milk warm to between 167- and 185-degrees. In our test for hot chocolate, the milk reached 182 degrees. This was a drinkable temperature that was plenty hot without scalding.

Ease of Use

There is a single button on this frother. Above this button are four small, light-up icons, each corresponding to a different function. You press the power button in succession to activate the different modes. The hardest part of using this device is figuring out which tiny icon was for which mode. But once you figure that out, the machine does all the work. When you’re done, just put the pitcher and frothing disc in the dishwasher.

Smooth, Creamy Hot Chocolate

In my experience, using powdered hot chocolate leaves much to be desired. I love the convenience, but even using milk instead of water, it lacks a certain creaminess. Plus, it seems no matter how much you stir, there’s a thick residue left on the bottom.

This device transforms ordinary powered hot chocolate into a heavenly delight. You just dump in the packet, add milk, then turn it on. The result was, honestly, the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had. Rich and creamy, there wasn’t the slightest hint of the granular texture powdered mixes leave. Plus, when I was done, there was no thick sludge at the bottom of the cup.

Features & Benefits

This automatic milk frother has a number of features that are typically on more expensive models. Here, we’ll break down what features Miroco’s frother offers.

Quiet Operation

This frother features a magnetic motor. This makes the operation whisper quiet with virtually no vibration.

Multi-Function

  • Stir and heat: slow speed; provides a minimum amount of foam for a perfect café au lait
  • Heat and froth: fast speed; produces thick foam suitable for cappuccinos
  • Cold milk froth: fast speed; produces cold, thick foam for iced coffee drinks
  • Froth and heat chocolate milk: fast speed; use chocolate cover

Large Capacity

You can stir and heat up to 16.9 ounces of milk, including chocolate milk. If you choose the function that produces a thicker foam, do not add more than 8.5 ounces of milk. You need to add at least 4 ounces of milk for the frother to function properly.

Value

The multi-function ability on this automatic frother matches that of much more expensive milk frothers. This model does not offer manually controlled variable temperature as some high-priced models do. But it does offer a cold frothing option and a higher temperature for chocolate milk.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Milk Frother

Warm coffee and milk are made for each other. But how do you decide which frother to buy? You’ll want to consider things like the source of power, size, and budget before making your choice.

There are three main types of frother: manual, electric handheld, and automatic. The most common form of manual frother is the French press style. You press the plunger up and down quickly a number of types. The internal whisking incorporates air into the milk. These are usually around $20,

The electric frother is basically a whisk that is usually battery-powered. With both the manual and electric frother, you need to use a separate method for heating the milk. The handheld is the least expensive type. You can usually find units in the $10 to $20 range.

An automatic frother both heats and froths the milk. Some have a detachable pitcher, which makes pouring and cleanup easier. You can also find one-piece units. One-piece units are usually less expensive, but they can be difficult to get your hand inside for washing. Automatic frothers have the biggest price range. Some might be under $20 while others cost well over $200.

The Miroco Detachable Milk Frother may not be for everyone. Here are two alternatives for different needs.

1 Breville BMF600XL Milk Cafe Milk Frother
